How to convert a video to MP3
- Add your video. Click the upload box or drop an MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV or AVI file. The preview shows its total duration and the end time is filled in for you.
- Trim if needed. Type a start and end time in
HH:MM:SSformat, for example00:01:15to00:02:00, to keep only that part. - Pick a bitrate and press Extract MP3. The first run downloads the FFmpeg engine, which your browser then caches.
- Listen and download. The MP3 plays on the page so you can check the trim before saving it.
Which bitrate should you choose?
| Bitrate | Use it for | Approx. size per minute |
|---|---|---|
| 320 kbps | Music you want to keep at the best MP3 quality | 2.4 MB |
| 256 kbps | Music and mixed content | 1.9 MB |
| 192 kbps | Podcasts, talks, general listening | 1.4 MB |
| 128 kbps | Speech, lectures, voice notes | 1 MB |
The bitrate only sets how much space the MP3 may use. If the video's own audio was recorded at 128 kbps, saving it at 320 kbps makes a larger file without improving the sound. Audio is resampled to 44.1 kHz, the standard rate for music players.
Common uses
Keep the audio of a lecture or meeting
Recordings of classes and calls are mostly speech, so 128 kbps keeps them clear at a small size. Trim away the silence at the start and end before converting.
Make a ringtone or clip
Set the start and end times around the part you want, often 20 to 30 seconds, and choose 192 kbps or higher.
Only convert what you have the right to use
Extracting audio from your own videos, or from material you have permission to use, is fine. Copyrighted music and films remain protected after conversion.
How your file is handled
The FFmpeg engine is loaded into the page from a public content network, and your video is read and converted inside the browser tab. The video is not uploaded to FastSaveMedia. If you need a smaller video instead of audio, use the Video Compressor.
