Webcam & Mic Test Online

By Nayeem, Software Developer of fastsavemedia.comLast reviewed

How to check your webcam and mic before a call

  1. Camera: press Start camera and allow access. The preview shows the resolution and frame rate your camera is actually delivering to the browser. If several cameras are connected, pick one from the list.
  2. Microphone: press Start microphone and talk at normal volume. Speech should push the level bar about halfway; a bar pinned at the end, or a verdict of “Too loud / clipping”, means it is too loud.
  3. Recording: press Record 5 seconds, then play it back to hear exactly what other people hear — echo, hiss and distance from the mic become obvious.
  4. Speakers: play the left, right and stereo-sweep tones. If a tone comes from the wrong side, your headset may be reversed or set to mono.

What the numbers mean

Resolution and FPS

Most laptop webcams deliver 1280×720 (720p) at 30 frames per second. 1920×1080 (1080p) is sharper, but Zoom, Meet and Teams usually send 720p or less depending on your connection. A frame rate well below 24 FPS often means poor lighting — the camera lengthens exposure in the dark — or that another app is using the camera.

Microphone level

The meter shows the loudest part of your voice relative to full scale. Comfortable speech peaks around the middle of the bar. If it barely moves, check the input device in your system settings, move closer, or raise the input gain.

Common fixes

  • "Permission denied": click the camera icon in the address bar and allow camera and microphone for this site, then reload.
  • Black preview: close Zoom, Teams or any other app that may be holding the camera, or check for a physical privacy shutter.
  • Wrong microphone: pick the correct device in the list — a headset and a laptop mic often both appear.
  • No sound from one side: check the headset is fully plugged in and that mono audio is turned off in accessibility settings.

Privacy

Camera and microphone streams stay on your device. Recordings exist only in this browser tab's memory and are discarded when you leave the page. Access stops as soon as you press Stop or close the tab.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my webcam and mic before a Zoom call?
Open this page, press Start camera to confirm the preview, then Start microphone and speak — the level bar should move. Record a 5-second clip and play it back. The whole check takes under a minute and needs no download.
Why does my webcam show low FPS?
Low light is the most common cause: the camera slows down to collect more light. Add front lighting, close other apps that use the camera, and plug a USB webcam directly into the computer rather than a hub.
Can I test left and right speakers separately?
Yes. The speaker test plays a tone through only the left channel, only the right channel, and a sweep that moves from left to right, so you can spot a dead or reversed side.
Is my video or audio uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser. The recording stays in the tab's memory and is deleted when you close or leave the page.
Which browsers are supported?
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, Android and iOS. The page must be opened over HTTPS for the browser to allow camera and mic access.
Why does the browser not list my device names?
Browsers hide device names until you grant permission. Start the camera or microphone once and the full device list appears.
