Different brands use different driver sizes, so the tone that clears a JBL is not the tone that clears an iPhone. This page is the single reference: pick your brand, read the settings, run the tone. If you are not sure what is wrong yet, start with phone speaker not working.

Apple: iPhone and MacBook
iPhone speaker ports are narrow and sit behind a fine mesh, so water clings rather than runs. The 165 Hz tone is the same frequency Apple's own Water Eject shortcut uses on Apple Watch, and it is the right starting point for every iPhone from the 7 onwards. MacBook grilles are a different problem. The drivers sit under a perforated strip either side of the keyboard, and liquid that lands there usually reaches the keyboard membrane too. Run 150 Hz twice with the laptop tented on its side, but treat the keyboard as the priority: shut down, do not charge, and leave it open and inverted overnight. Samsung, Pixel and OnePlus
Android phones behave much like iPhones acoustically, but the speaker layout varies more. Most Galaxy S models fire from the bottom edge and share the earpiece as a second channel, which is why one channel can sound normal while the other is muffled. Run 165 Hz with the phone face-down, then repeat with the phone held earpiece-down so the second driver gets the same treatment.
Foldables need extra care. On Z Fold and Z Flip models water can sit in the hinge channel, and no tone will move it — that one is a drying problem, not a vibration problem. JBL portable speakers
JBL Flip, Charge and Xtreme models get their bass from passive radiators — the two moving discs on the ends. Those discs are also where water collects. Because the moving mass is much larger than a phone driver, a lower tone works better: 145 Hz is the sweet spot, and 165 Hz noticeably underperforms on these.
Pair the speaker to a phone, set the phone to about 80% and the speaker to maximum, then stand the JBL on one end so a radiator faces down. Run three cycles, rotating the speaker between them so both radiators drain. Bose SoundLink and QuietComfort
Bose tunes its portables tightly, so a small amount of trapped water changes the sound more than you would expect. The usual complaint is that the speaker sounds smaller rather than quieter: bass loses weight because the passive radiator is carrying extra mass. 155 Hz suits the SoundLink Flex and Micro; the Revolve family fires downward into a deflector, so invert the speaker completely or the water simply pools in the cavity.
QuietComfort earbuds are a low-volume job. Keep the source at 40–50%, use 175 Hz, and never hold a bud against your ear while a tone plays. Sweat leaves salt on the mesh after it dries, which is why a bud can sound worse a day later than it did when it was wet.
Sonos and home speakers
Sonos Roam and Move are rated for outdoor use but are not designed to be submerged. Run 150 Hz with the grille angled down and give the unit longer to dry than a smaller speaker — the enclosure volume is bigger, so evaporation is slower. Mains-powered Sonos units such as the One or Era are indoor speakers with no ingress rating: if liquid went in, unplug first and prioritise drying over any tone.
For any mains or battery speaker, the rule that matters most is the charging one. Do not put a charger into a damp port. The speaker will usually survive the water; it often does not survive the current.
When the tone is the wrong tool
A tone moves loose water and loose dust. It does not fix a torn diaphragm, a corroded flex cable or a failed amplifier. Step-by-Step: Speaker Cleaner By Brand
- Find your brand row in the table. Driver size decides the frequency. Take the Hz value and cycle count from the row that matches your device.
- Set the output volume. Phones and laptops go to 100%. Bluetooth speakers go to about 80% on the source with the speaker itself at maximum.
- Point the grille straight down. Lay the device face-down over a lint-free cloth so gravity works with the tone instead of against it.
- Play the tone for 30 seconds. Do not touch or block the grille while it runs. Water usually appears as a visible bead on the cloth.
- Tap gently, then repeat. Tap the device against your palm between cycles. Three cycles is the practical limit for one session.
- Dry before charging. Leave the port dry for several hours before plugging anything in. Corrosion in a wet port causes more failures than the water in the speaker did.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the frequency really need to change per brand?
Yes, within reason. Larger drivers and passive radiators move more air at lower frequencies, so 145–155 Hz shifts water out of a JBL or Bose faster than 165 Hz does. On a phone the difference is smaller, which is why 165 Hz works across every phone brand.
Can I use this on a Bluetooth speaker instead of my phone?
Yes. Pair the speaker, make it the output device, then play the tone. Keep the source around 80% and the speaker at maximum rather than the other way round.
How many cycles is too many?
Three in one session. Beyond that you are heating the voice coil for no additional benefit. Let the device rest and dry, then try again later if it still sounds wrong.
My earbuds sound worse a day after they got wet. Why?
Sweat and pool water leave mineral residue on the mesh as they evaporate. The residue stiffens the mesh, so the bud sounds duller dry than it did wet. A low-volume 175 Hz cycle plus a careful wipe usually restores it.
Is this safe for a speaker still under warranty?
Playing audio through a speaker is normal use, so a tone at normal volume does not void anything. Opening the device, inserting a tool into the grille or charging while wet is what causes warranty rejections.
My brand is not listed. What do I use?
Match by driver size. Anything phone-sized takes 165 Hz, anything with a visible passive radiator takes 145–155 Hz, and earbuds take 175 Hz at low volume. You can set an exact value on the tone generator.
