Why Can’t I Hear Callers on My Phone?

Step-by-Step: Can’t Hear Callers on My Phone
- Activate speakerphone on a call. This is the easiest way to troubleshoot. If it becomes audible on speakerphone, that means that the loudspeaker and network are fine, and the issue is the earpiece path. If it is still inaudible, that means that the issue is not the earpiece and is therefore a problem with the call.
- Raise the volume while the call is connected. In-call volume is a separate channel and it only responds during a call. Pressing volume up before dialling changes the ringer instead. Hold volume up while the caller is speaking.
- Check where call audio is being sent. Open the in-call audio menu and confirm the destination is the earpiece, not a paired car kit, watch or earbud. A stuck Bluetooth route sends the voice somewhere else entirely, which sounds identical to a dead earpiece.
- Inspect the receiver slot and the protector edge. Look along the slot in bright light. A screen protector overlapping the cut-out, or a grey plug of lint, blocks the receiver without blocking anything else. Brush it dry with a soft brush and never insert a pin.
- Turn off noise cancellation and set your hearing to normal. Phone noise cancellation, mono audio, and hearing device modes alter how your phone transmits call audio. Turn them off one by one to see which one was affecting the call.
- Compare across two different calls. Call a landline and then a mobile on another network. A fault on only one call is a network leg, not your phone. A fault on every call, with speakerphone working, points to the receiver itself.

Earpiece versus loudspeaker
Most phones carry two output devices, and they fail independently.
The earpiece
It is the narrow slot at the top, built for one voice at close range. It is small, quiet by design, and easily blocked by a protector or lint.
The loudspeaker
It sits at the bottom edge and handles music, ringtones and speakerphone. It is louder and its opening is wider, so it clogs more slowly.
Why the distinction matters
Cleaning the bottom grille does nothing for call audio. Fixing the earpiece does nothing for music. Test which one is affected before you spend any time on it.
The settings worth checking
Four settings account for most call-audio complaints on a healthy phone.
In-call volume
It is a separate channel from media and ringer, and it only moves during an active call [1].
Call audio routing
Phones keep a preferred output for calls. If a car kit or watch is paired, calls can keep going there silently [2].
Noise cancellation
It suppresses background sound during calls. On a phone with a partly blocked microphone port it can thin out the caller as well.
Hearing accessibility
Mono audio, hearing-device mode and audio balance all change call delivery. A balance slider pushed to one side is a common accidental cause.
When it is the call, not the phone
Some faint-caller cases never involve your hardware at all.
Voice calls are encoded and carried over the mobile network, and a weak leg on either side degrades the voice before it reaches you [3].
How to tell
It affects some calls, not all. It changes when you move a few metres. The other person often reports the same thing at the same moment.
What actually helps
Turn on Wi-Fi calling where it is supported. Move away from thick walls and lifts. Ask the caller to switch off their own speakerphone, which frequently adds echo and clipping.
What not to do
Four common attempts do more harm than the original fault.
- Do not push a pin, staple or needle into the receiver slot. The mesh behind it is thin and a puncture is permanent.
- Do not blast compressed air into the slot. It drives lint and moisture deeper into the cavity.
- Do not run high-volume cleaning tones hoping to clear the earpiece. The receiver is not designed for sustained output, and it will not shift packed lint.
- Do not install a call-volume booster app. It cannot exceed the hardware limit, and it commonly breaks call routing instead.
When to pay someone
Stop and book a repair when any of these is true.
- Speakerphone is clear, the earpiece is silent, and a careful dry clean changed nothing.
- Call audio stopped straight after a screen or battery replacement.
- The phone was submerged, and calls stayed faint after a full dry-out.
- The earpiece works intermittently when you press near the top of the screen, which suggests a loose connector.

Why can I only hear callers on speakerphone?
Because speakerphone uses the bottom loudspeaker while a normal call uses the earpiece at the top. If speakerphone is clear, the loudspeaker and the network are both fine, and the fault is in the earpiece slot or in call routing. Check for a misaligned screen protector and packed lint first.
How do I know if my earpiece is broken or just blocked?
