How the overtime calculator works
The calculator first derives your hourly rate from your monthly salary and standard hours. It then multiplies the OT hours by your chosen multiplier (1.5× or 2×) to give the overtime amount, and adds it back to your base for total earnings.
Standard overtime multipliers
| Region | Threshold | Multiplier |
|---|---|---|
| India (Factories Act) | > 9 hrs/day or 48 hrs/week | 2× (twice the ordinary rate) |
| USA (FLSA) | > 40 hrs/week | 1.5× (time-and-a-half) |
| UK | By contract (no statutory rate) | 1.0× – 2× |
| UAE | > 8 hrs/day | 1.25× / 1.5× / 2× (Friday) |
| EU (avg) | > 40 hrs/week | 1.25× – 1.5× |
Worked example
Monthly salary ₹40,000 • Standard hours 200 • OT hours 20 • Multiplier 1.5×
Hourly rate = 40,000 / 200 = ₹200 → OT pay = 200 × 20 × 1.5 = ₹6,000 → Total = ₹46,000.
Tips to maximize OT pay
- Log every OT hour in writing (email/Slack to manager) — verbal OT is rarely paid.
- Track weekend / public-holiday work separately — it usually qualifies for 2×.
- Save hourly rate snapshots so you can negotiate during appraisal.
